Who doesn’t love a good cheesy appetizer? Brie is a classic cheese appetizer, whether it’s served as cheese and crackers, baked brie, or these brie bites with hot honey. Pieces of brie are dunked in an egg wash followed by a breading that gets crispy when fried in oil. With the crispy exterior, soft melty warm interior, and hot honey thyme drizzle, there’s nothing better than snacking on these while you wait for dinner to be ready. You’re only trouble will be making sure you don’t eat too many of them and spoil your meal! I recommend serving these soon after making them and trust me, no one will be able to keep their hands off of them.
Ingredients for Brie Bites
- Brie! This recipe is easily doubled or tripled depending on how many guests you need to serve. For a smaller gathering or one where you are planning multiple appetizers, one wheel of brie is sufficient. But for a larger gathering or if you are planning on 1-2 appetizers, I recommend doubling or tripling that amount.
- Eggs: The brie is dunked into an egg wash before the breadcrumb mixture to allow the breadcrumbs to stick.
- Breadcrumbs: We are using panko breadcrumbs here for the ultimate crunch!
- Flour: panko breadcrumbs have a larger texture, adding flour to the breading ensures that every bit of the brie is coated.
- Salt and pepper: for the breading!
- Honey: Honey is warmed slightly for the hot honey mixture. If you heat it too much, it will harden when drizzled over the brie.
- Fresh thyme: I love the flavor that the thyme gives the honey.
- Red pepper flakes: Measure these with your heart depending on how much heat you want. Since the hot honey is just a drizzle and the creaminess of the brie cuts through the spiciness, you may want to the honey to be on the spicy side! But use your best judgement depending on what you or your guests would prefer.
How to Make Brie Bites
- First, cut your brie into cubes or small slices.
- Take out two separate shallow bowls. In one, whisk the eggs. In the second, prepare the breading by mixing together the breadcrumbs, flour, salt, and pepper.
- In a large skillet, heat the oil. Working in batches and being sure to not crowd the pan, coat each piece of brie in the egg wash and then cover in the breading. Cook the brie on both sides until golden brown, then transfer to a paper plate lined with paper towels. Repeat until all the brie bites are fried.
- In a microwave safe bowl, heat the honey with the red pepper flakes and thyme. Drizzle over the fried brie bites and serve more on the side for dipping, if desired.
What to Serve with Brie Bites
That’s one of the best parts of this appetizer; there’s no need to serve them with anything! I do have the extra hot honey on the side for serving in case anyone wants and extra drizzle of it. And who can blame them when it’s this delicious? This easy brie appetizer is a great addition to any cheese board or appetizer spread or for any holiday party or gathering. If you have any leftovers (and I doubt you will!), I think they would be a fun addition to a holiday salad.
- 1 wheel of brie
- 3 eggs
- ¾ cup panko bread crumbs
- ¼ cup flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. ground black pepper
- ⅔ cup honey
- 1-3 tsp. red pepper flakes
- 4 sprigs fresh thyme
- Oil for frying
- Cut the brie into small slices or cubes.
- In a shallow bowl, crack the eggs and whisk.
- In a separate shallow bowl, mix the bread crumbs, flour, salt, and pepper.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet. Working in batches and being careful not to crowd the pan, coat the brie bites in the egg wash, followed by the breadcrumb mixture. Place the brie bites in the pan and cook on both sides until golden brown. Transfer to a paper plate lined with paper towels when they are done frying.
- In a microwave safe bowl or a small saucepan, combine the honey, red pepper flakes, and thyme. Heat until the honey is smooth and the mixture is combined, but do not bring to a simmer or the honey will harden when it cools.
- Drizzle the honey over the brie bites and serve any extra on the side while serving.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
