I really like the idea of mint chocolate chip ice cream. The thing is, it’s not chocolatey enough for me. I love a rich, chocolate ice cream, but I also love the combination of mint and chocolate. This chocolate mint ice cream is the way to go if you’re like me! It’s full of mint flavor, but has way more chocolate than typical mint chocolate chip ice cream. It reminds me of a thin mint or an Andes mint!
If you don’t have an ice cream maker, or are wondering if you’ll use it often enough, I think it’s a worthwhile purchase! This is the one I’ve been using for years and I love it. You’ll find that making ice cream at home is easy and delicious and uses simple ingredients: things like heavy cream, milk, and sugar. The ice cream maker makes the process so easy and you can make all your favorite flavors at home!
I used mint extract to give this ice cream that classic mint flavor, but if you’re looking for a traditional chocolate ice cream recipe, just substitute vanilla extract. How easy is that? Homemade ice cream does take a tiny bit of patience. You’ll need to freeze your ice cream bowl in advance and refrigerate the ice cream mixture before pouring it into the frozen ice cream bowl. After that, the appliance does all the work for you. When it’s done the ice cream is the consistency of soft serve, but I like to transfer it to a freezer-safe container and put in the freezer until it’s more solid for scooping.
This is absolutely my favorite homemade ice cream and I plan to make it all summer long!
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- Pinch of salt
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp. peppermint extract
- Before you begin your ice cream making process, make sure your freezer bowl for the ice cream maker is frozen solid.
- Whisk together cream, milk, sugar, salt, cocoa powder, and peppermint extract. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours until fully chilled.
- Transfer the mixture to the ice cream maker and turn it on. When your desired texture is reached (after about 10 minutes), transfer the ice cream to a freezer safe container and freeze until solid.
- Scoop and enjoy!
