I will be honest, I don’t particularly enjoy watching sports. I love the Olympics but other than that, I’m typically reading a book if a game is on. I can get behind some game day snacks though! Wings, buffalo chicken dip, my famous jalapeno popper wontons, and 7 layer dip are some of my absolute favorites. Another great addition to this spread would be cheeseburger egg rolls. They are easier to make than you’d think, with a seasoned ground beef filling (though ground turkey or chicken would also work), tucked into a crispy egg roll wrapper. We’re serving it with some special sauce for dipping, but you can also dip in ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, or even ranch!
Ingredients for Cheeseburger Egg Rolls
- Ground beef. I’m using ground beef for a classic cheeseburger taste, but you can also use ground turkey or ground chicken and drizzle it with a little olive oil as you brown it.
- Onion. It’s really important to finely chop the onions. You want them to blend in well with the meat for flavor, but not be noticeable.
- Salt and pepper. Always!
- Garlic powder. I just about always use garlic powder when I’m seasoning meat. It’s a great addition!
- Smoked paprika. This helps add a smokey grilled flavor without actually using a grill.
- Worcestershire sauce. This will add a little umami flavor and add depth to the egg rolls.
- Soy sauce. Just little goes a long way in the flavor department! Trust me on this one!
- Shredded cheese. You can make these hamburger or cheeseburger egg rolls, but the shredded cheese makes them a cheeseburger egg roll!
- Egg roll wrappers.
- Oil for frying.
- Special sauce ingredients: mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, pepper, dill relish. It seems like a lot of ingredients but that’s where the magic happens!
How to Make Cheeseburger Egg Rolls
- First, brown your ground beef. While it’s cooking, finely chop your onions. You can also use a box grater or a food processor, but it’s important to make sure they’re chopped finely! Add the onions to the pan and cook for a few minutes.
- Add the salt, pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce and cook for a few more minutes. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed.
- To form the egg rolls, place an egg roll wrapper on a clean surface. Spoon some of the burger filling onto the egg roll and sprinkle with cheese, if using. Wet your fingers with water and rub the water on the entire exterior of the egg roll wrapper. Fold in the ends, then roll up the egg roll. It should be sealed, if not, unroll it and add a bit more water. Be careful not to overfill! Repeat until all of the burger filling is gone. You should have about 15 egg rolls.
- Wipe out the pan that you used to prepare the filling and heat about 1/2 an inch of oil in the pan. Cook the egg rolls a few at a time on all sides until browned. You only need to cook for a few minutes per side before they’re crispy and golden! Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels.
- Prepare your special sauce. In a bowl mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, a pinch of cayenne, salt, pepper, and dill or sweet relish. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed!
- Serve the egg rolls warm with your special sauce for dipping! You can also cut them in half for a smaller serving size.
Even if you’re not making these for a game day spread, they’re also a great grab-and-go dinner. I know many of you (like myself) are looking for portable options for kids to eat while going to the soccer or baseball field for practice in the evening! I can make these before we leave and serve them once we get there for something portable, warm, and filling. What’s not to love? I hope you love these as much as we do!
- 1½ lbs. ground beef
- ½ onion, finely chopped
- 1½ tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. ground black pepper
- 1½ tsp. garlic powder
- 1½ tsp. smoked paprika
- ½ tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp. soy sauce
- Shredded cheese (optional)
- Egg roll wrappers
- Oil for frying
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 3 tbsp. mustard
- ½ tsp. garlic powder
- ½ tsp. onion powder
- Pinch cayenne pepper
- ½ tsp. ground black pepper
- Salt to taste
- 1-2 tbsp. sweet or dill relish
- In a frying pan, brown the ground beef. Break into pieces as it cooks. Once it's browned, add the onions and cook for a few more minutes.
- Add the salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce. Stir to combine and cook for a few minutes. Taste and add more seasonings as needed.
- Place an egg roll wrapper on a clean surface. Add a few spoons of the burger filling onto the egg roll wrapper. Add the cheese if using. Dip your fingers in water and wet the edges of the egg roll wrapper. Tuck in the edges first, then roll it up!
- Wipe out the pan with a paper towel. Heat up about ½ an inch of oil in the pan and place the egg roll in the pan, seam side down. Cook on all sides until golden brown. This won't take long so keep an eye on them! Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to soak up the excess oil.
- To make the sauce, in a small bowl whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, pepper, salt, and relish.
- Serve the egg rolls warm with the special sauce and enjoy!
