I’m trying to be positive in the midst of what’s going on in our world right now and plan fun activities and schoolwork with my kids. I will tell you that it’s hard in so many ways, and when I think about the fact that we don’t know when this will improve it gives me a bit of anxiety. So I’m throwing myself into planning things to do with my kids at home, and taking it day by day. One activity that I plan to do with my kids is cooking and baking! I know this is stressful for a lot of people and definitely has the potential to be messy, but my kids always love baking and eating treats. You may be wondering what to cook with your kids! Some of their favorite things to bake are muffins or bread for breakfast, but we also make cookies as a treat. Muffins are a great place to start because they’re easy, bake quickly, and breakfast is now ready for the next day. Below I’m sharing some of my favorite recipes to bake with my kids.
What to bake with your kids
- Blender Apple Spice Muffins
- Healthy Banana Bread
- Almond Poppyseed Muffins
- Red, White, and Blue Muffins
- Chocolate Chip Cookies
- Healthy Zucchini Bread
- Double Chocolate Zucchini Bread
- Orange Chocolate Chip Muffins
- Banana Almond Butter Muffins
- Sweet Potato Banana Muffins
- Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread
- Cookie Dough Energy Balls
What to cook with your kids
- Macaroni and Cheese: Instant Pot Cauliflower Mac and Cheese. Little kids will need some help with this dish, but since it’s a super easy instant pot meal, your older kids can make this with minimal help. Let them dump in the ingredients and you handle setting the timer on the instant pot. As a bonus, this recipe has extra veggies snuck in!
- Personal Pizzas: One of my kids favorite dinners is when I let them make their own pizzas. To make it even easier, you don’t need to make pizza dough from scratch and can use flatbread. Just add sauce, cheese, and your favorite toppings. This is especially a great meal option for little kids!
- Meatballs: these chicken parmesan meatballs are a great place to start! Even younger kids can form meatballs in their hands, and I have quite a few meatball recipes on my blog.
- Sloppy Joes: I have both a turkey and meatless version on the blog. Again, this is a recipe where younger kids will need more help but an older kid or teen should be able to make this themselves.
- Tacos: I have an instant pot pineapple chicken taco recipe, but also the classic ground beef + taco seasoning blend is a classic favorite.
- Chili: It doesn’t get much easier than tossing your ingredients into the slow cooker! This recipe makes a huge batch and will last you a few days.
- Broccoli Cheddar Mini Frittatas: If your kids can make their own breakfast, it’s a win all around. These broccoli cheddar mini frittatas are a great way to start the day and my kids love to help with the mixing.
I hope you found some great ideas in this post to get in the kitchen with your kids! It’s very easy to become anxious and nervous about having kids home from an extended period of time right now, and I think the best way to move forward is to stay home, find fun things to do with our kids (like cooking and baking), and take it day by day! We can do this, we can get through this. It won’t be easy every day or maybe it won’t be easy any days, but we can get through this!
