Happy New Year! I’m all about food traditions, and we tend to make the same recipes each year for certain holiday. Thanksgiving always has my cornbread sausage dressing, Christmas has my twice-baked mashed potatoes, etc. But did you know it’s considered good luck to eat black eyed peas on New Years? It’s a fun food tradition to incorporate with your family in the new year. This version is made in the instant pot with rice, ham, bacon, and wintery herbs like rosemary and sage. It’s cozy and perfect for winter, and while I can’t confirm it’ll bring you good luck in the new year, it is a fun food tradition! Instant pot black eyed peas and ham belongs on your New Years menu.
I went to bed at 10pm last night after eating takeout Chinese with Kevin on the couch in sweatpants, drinking homemade eggnog, and watching Star Wars, and the kids were all in bed at 7. If that isn’t a perfect New Years Eve I don’t know what is! During the day we did “Noon Years Eve” with a friend and her kids. We had a kid-friendly appetizer spread for lunch, sparkling cider, and poppers and horns to blow at noon. A milk and cookies toast closed out the party, and it was the perfect way to enjoy the holiday with littles. Another perfect way to enjoy the holiday? This instant pot black eyed peas and ham of course!
A lot of bloggers have shared quite a bit about what this past year has meant to them and what they’re looking forward to in the new year. I re-read the New Years post that I wrote to close out 2017 and I feel a lot of the same sentiments. It’s interesting that at the end of 2017 I had no idea we would be welcoming our beautiful baby girl before the end of 2018. I had no idea where my blog would be now. I had no idea the friendships that would grow and deepen, how perfect our little family of five would feel, or really anything about what the coming years would bring. And you know what? That’s ok. 2019 has been filled with great memories with the people I love, and I think 2020 can only be better. Happy New Year friends!
